1900 S Meadow Street Richmond VA

01/19 by Andrea Levine

1900 South Meadow is really an amazing house, for so many reasons.

1900 S Meadow is the first Richmond VA home in the 'International' Modern style

1900 S Meadow is the first Richmond VA home in the ‘International’ Modern style

Designed by George E Hoppe Jr and built in the mid 30’s, Mr Hoppe wanted to introduce Richmond to the International style “Modern” house. It has been documented as the first “Modern” home in Richmond, VA.   The home has undergone a full renovation, artfully done and yet honoring its unique lines and features.

I think the kitchen might be one of my favorite rooms in the home.  In designing the kitchen we interviewed local chefs in order to create a true “cooks kitchen”.  The layout functions like a commercial kitchen, it offers accessibility, great flow and even lighting, there’s also a separate pasta making counter with an integrated prep sink.  The countertops are locally fabricated custom stainless steel, there’s a ceramic tile backsplash, a dual fuel convection range and solid maple cabinetry with full extension drawers.  The commercial grade rubber flooring is very warm and forgiving, it’s the same material used in NYC subways.  Adjacent to the kitchen is a comfortable office nook, and a lofted dining room with maple wall panels and dimmable lights throughout.

Without a doubt, the amount of natural light and the quality of this light greatly enhances the living experience in our home.  Simply put, the house glows, especially during the winter months when sun light reflects off the James River.  And the views from these windows are spectacular with historic Kanawha canal and the James River beyond.

The master bedroom feels like you’re in a tree house.  We vaulted the ceiling and added integrated  lighting for a very soft indirect  glow at night.  The upstairs bathroom remains intact, with Amethyst and Ruby architectural glass tile from the 30’s.   The guest bedroom/office has ample built-in storage space, heart pine flooring and a slightly vaulted ceiling.

During the whole process we kept in mind modern houses don’t have a lot of clutter or stuff so we built in tons of storage along the way.  Plus there’s a separate laundry room on the first floor and the partial basement has a workshop area.

We have opened our doors to architectural tours and have been featured in RHome magazine with an Honorable Mention in Metropolitan Home.  Their favorite quote from us regarding the renovation: “No matter how much duct tape and plastic you use, you’re going to have plaster dust in your Cornflakes”.  At least the next proud owners won’t.
