[ MLS Zone 10 ] Church Hill is located east of Downtown and is the oldest surviving, and most historic neighborhood in Richmond. A number of important scenes from the American Revolution took place in Church Hill’s St. John’s Church, the most prominent and picturesque block on Church Hill.
The evolution of City of Richmond is visible in the architecture of this neighborhood. Homes range from grand to more modest Greek Revivals, to the whimsical Queen Anne style, to the straightforward Victorian clapboard houses that populate the area. Church Hill is peripheral to Shockoe Bottom which was a commerical hub for Richmond, North of the James.
Today, historic warehouses there and bordering the river, have been tranformedto loft housing offering a blend of designs for a variety of life-styles. Church Hill commands some powerful views of the city’s Downtown skyline, Shockoe Bottom and the James River.
Church Hill is a favorite for those preferring a pedestrian experience. The neighborhood features brick and cobblestone walkways, and a number of lovely parks with scenic views from its perched site. Church Hill is close to Downtown, MCV/VCU, and the interstate.
A recently developed residential neighborhood to the East of Church Hill is Rockett’s Landing which offers unique lofts, townhomes, and condos right on the James River. Church Hill residents can enjoy riverside amenities and fine dining at nearby Rockett’s Landing. Geographically, Church Hill is considered part of Richmond’s East End.
